چکیده

Abstract. Experimental setup for spectroscopic measurements of molecular radicals at low temperatures is presented. Radicals are created in a DC discharge and cooled by supersonic expansion. Absorption spectroscopy in the near IR region is used to probe the neutral transient species formed in the discharge, using tuneable extended cavity diode lasers. Initial characteristics of the radical source are presented; discharge current-voltage characterization, molecular OH radical concentrations and temperature were measured.

In our laboratory a novel and convenient technique has been developed to generate an intense pulsed cyano radical beam to be employed in crossed molecular beam experiments investigating the chemical dynamics of bimolecular reactions. CN radicals in their ground electronic state S are produced in situ via laser ablation of a graphite rod at 266 nm and 30 mJ output power and subsequent reaction o...

A pulsed, low-temperature beam of supersonically cooled free radical OH molecules

An improved system for creating a pulsed, low-temperature molecular beam of hydroxyl radical (OH) radicals has been developed. We use a pulsed discharge to create OH from H2O seeded in Xe during a supersonic expansion, where the high-voltage pulse duration is significantly shorter than the width of the gas pulse. The pulsed discharge allows for control of the mean speed of the molecular packet ...

Simulation of MHD Turbulence-Chemistry Interaction in Supersonic Flow

In order to improve the operational efficiency of scramjet engines, it is necessary to develop new techniques to increase the mixing and flameholding properties at high Mach numbers of current scramjet designs. This paper investigates the high-temperature chemistry and plasmadynamic effects of a discharge arc in a supersonic shear layer. This is the first step in developing a clear understandin...
